The Pana'ewa Stampede Rodeo Rodeo is an annual event that showcases the best rodeo skills and talents in the region (along with a few other places). It is a two-day event that features various events such as bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, and many more. This rodeo also highlights the talents of local Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy/cowgirls) and generational rodeo families from the state. In addition to traditional events, we have a number of Hawai'i-only rodeo events as well as some events open to the public. The rodeo attracts thousands of visitors every year, and it is an event that you don't want to miss.
A pair of contestants race against the clock as the "header" ropes a steer's head and the "heeler" tries to rope its hind legs. We have several versions of this event: Open Dally (open to all competitors), Kane-Wahine (male/female partnership), and Century (partners' combined ages equal 100 or older).
A pair will work together to rope and knock down a steer/cow, then tie three legs together. The tie must hold for 6 seconds.
Male and female team works together to rope and hold a calf while one partner removes a ribbon from its tail. The two rush to a nearby barrel, holding the ribbon, rope and the other's hand, to stop the clock.
Horse and cowboy/cowgirls work together to rope and tie a calf while racing against the clock.
Hawai'i event derived from practice of roping livestock in the open, then having to tie them up to a tree until they could come back for the animal. Contestants work with their horse to rope a steer, guide it to a post, then use a separate rope to tie its horns to the post.
Some of the most dangerous events in rodeo, this category includes Bull Riding and Ranch Bronc Riding. Cowboys/Cowgirls compete for the best score and to stay on a bull or bronc for eight seconds.
A rider ropes a calf attaching her end of the rope to her saddle horn. The rope will "break away" once tension has been reached by the calf running away from the rider. This is also a race against the clock.
Highlighting the skills of the cowgirl, this is a race against the clock as she works with her horse to make a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels.
Youth Calf Riding and Sheep Riding
Children 4-8 years old compete against the clock to rope a "dummy" steer.
Novelty events change each year, and include a number of events that are open to the public. Sign-ups for these events will take place at the arena during the rodeo, and are for adults 18+ years of age.
